Ask the candidate to walk through the most complex or contentious audit finding they've been part of: what the issue was, how they gathered evidence, and whether management or the client pushed back. Probe specifically for how they applied professional skepticism, whether they escalated the disagreement and to whom, and how it was ultimately resolved. If they can't recall a contentious finding, ask about the most technically difficult area they've tested instead and how they built confidence in the result.
