Plan an AI ethics study for adult college students

This template is written for students aged 18 or older at a college or university. It combines familiarity ratings, training experience, ethical scenarios, attitudes, and background questions. Review the consent wording and research purpose before inviting participants.

Choose the sections that answer your study question. For a before-and-after training comparison, keep the same core questions and audience definition; self-reported familiarity and attitudes do not by themselves measure demonstrated ethical decision-making.

For example, students might report high familiarity with privacy but disagree about a study tool that collects personal data. Use the scenario answers and optional AI interview to explore that reasoning, then decide which examples to address in the next lesson.

Message

The next questions describe hypothetical situations involving AI. Please read each scenario carefully and select the option closest to what you would actually do — not what you think you should do.

Q12
Multiple Choice

Scenario 1: You are completing a major course assignment and discover that the AI tool you used has generated content that closely mirrors an existing published source without attribution. What would you most likely do?

  • Remove the AI-generated content entirely and rewrite it myself
  • Keep the content but add a proper citation to the original source
  • Flag the issue to my instructor and ask for guidance
  • Keep the content as-is — the AI generated it, so it's not really plagiarism
  • I'm not sure what I would do
Q13
Multiple Choice

Scenario 2: A classmate shows you an AI tool that can generate highly realistic fake references for a research paper. They suggest you both use it to save time. What would you most likely do?

  • Decline and explain why I think it's wrong
  • Decline but not say anything to my classmate about their choice
  • Report the tool or the situation to an instructor or academic integrity office
  • Consider using it depending on the stakes of the assignment
  • Use it — if the references look real, it probably doesn't matter
  • I'm not sure what I would do

Themes, quotes, and a plain-English summary write themselves once responses come in.

How it compares

We reviewed the closest templates from other survey tools. Here’s what they do well — and where this template goes further.

Why this template

  • Includes a dedicated concept-familiarity battery (algorithmic bias, fairness, transparency, accountability, data privacy) that maps directly to AI ethics literacy rather than generic brand or product recall
  • Uses two hypothetical ethical-dilemma scenarios (multiple-choice) to probe actual decision-making, not just self-reported attitudes
  • Adds an AI follow-up interview question that adapts based on the respondent's prior answers to surface open-ended reasoning automated report generation can then summarize
  • Includes trade-off questions (willingness to pay, accept slower processing, less personalization, extra learning time) to quantify how far students will go to prioritize ethics over convenience

10 Product Awareness & Attitudes Survey Questions + Sample Questionnaire Template

This is a generic awareness-and-attitudes questionnaire guide aimed at product/brand research, not an AI ethics or student-specific instrument. It's useful as a structural reference for building awareness+attitude question sets but reads more as an explainer article with an embedded sample template than a ready-to-field academic survey. Topic, audience, and question content would need substantial rewriting to fit AI ethics research with students.

What it does well

  • Established survey platform with broad question-type library and customization tools
  • Provides a clear framework (awareness -> attitude -> usage) that researchers can adapt
  • Includes a sample questionnaire alongside the explanatory guide

Where it falls short

  • Not built for AI ethics topics or student populations — no concept-familiarity, dilemma-scenario, or regulation-attitude content specific to this subject
  • Static question format with no adaptive AI follow-up probing or automated per-response quality scoring
  • No transparent documentation of underlying prompts/methodology since it isn't an AI-driven interview tool

Frequently asked questions

Is this AI ethics survey suitable for schoolchildren?

The current questions and introduction target adult college or university students. A study with younger pupils needs age-appropriate questions and a suitable participation process. For a shorter adult study, select the relevant sections and check the completion time in a pilot.

The template includes 32 ready-to-use questions, starting with: “Are you currently enrolled as a student at a college or university (full-time or part-time)?” · “Which of the following best describes your current level of study?” · “What is your primary field of study?”. The full set is previewed above, and every question is editable.

How long does this survey take to complete?

Respondents typically finish the 32 questions in about 15 minutes.

Can I customize this template?

Yes — every question, answer option, and the ordering is editable before you launch. You can add or remove questions, or ask the AI editor to rework the survey around your research goal.
