Carry-forward between questions

Dynamically populate a question with options the respondent selected (or skipped) in an earlier question.

Carry-forward lets a choice question (multiple choice, dropdown, or ranking) inherit its options from a previous question. Show only the options the respondent selected, or only the ones they did not select, to create efficient follow-up questions without duplicating option lists.

Steps

  1. Add a follow-up choice question
Add a multiple choice, dropdown, or ranking question after the source question whose options you want to carry forward.
  2. Enable carry-forward
In the follow-up question settings, enable Carry Forward and select the source question.
  3. Choose the mode
Select Selected to show only the options the respondent chose, or Not Selected to show only the options they did not choose.
  4. Preview and test
Use the preview to confirm the correct options appear based on the respondent's earlier answer.

Carry-forward eliminates redundant option lists by dynamically populating a question based on earlier answers. If a respondent selected "Feature A" and "Feature C" from a list of five features, a carry-forward follow-up can show only those two for deeper evaluation.

Two modes are available: Selected (show what the respondent picked) and Not Selected (show what they skipped). "Not Selected" is useful for exploring why certain options were not chosen.

Carry-forward works with multiple choice, dropdown, and ranking question types. The source question must be a choice-type question that appears earlier in the survey flow.

Carried-forward options are included in exports, so analysis tools can trace which options were presented to each respondent.
