Import responses into an existing survey
Map answers in a CSV, TSV or XLSX file to questions in an existing survey.
Before you start
This feature must be enabled for your workspace, and you need edit access. If Results → Tools does not offer Import responses, it is not available to you. Create the destination questions and options first. Keep an unchanged copy of the source file.
Steps
Choose the file
Open Results → Tools → Import responses and choose a CSV, TSV or XLSX file. Each row represents a response, with one column per mapped question.Map columns
For each column, choose a survey question, Respondent id, Date answered, Weight, or Leave out. Map each question from one column only. Supported question types include numeric, multiple choice, dropdown, rating, opinion scale, short text, long text and email.Map choices and missing values
Map every distinct choice value to an existing option, or list it as a “No answer” code. For multi-select answers, set Choices separated by. A no-answer code excludes that response from the question’s base; map Don’t know to an option if you want to count it.Preserve IDs, dates and weights
Map stable respondent IDs to skip records already imported with those IDs. Use ISO dates or date-times for Date answered; otherwise import time is used. Weights must be positive. Check the mappings before importing.Import and check the summary
Choose Import, resolve any row or column errors, and read the counts for imported, already present and empty responses. Then check Results. Imported responses are labeled in Results, exports and AI reports.
Details and limitations
Imported responses count as real response records in the product, but their origin remains imported. Document where the source data came from and do not present it as newly collected QuestionPunk interviews.
Check the result
Valid rows are added to the survey with their imported origin visible. The completion summary explains which rows were skipped.
If something goes wrong
An exact file imported again without respondent IDs can double the records. If the app warns that the file was already imported, use Import it again only when intentional. This workflow imports answers into existing questions; use the questionnaire importer to rebuild a study, or analysis import to work with a separate dataset.
