No. The AHRF terms do not allow reuse or resale without HRSA permission, and parts of the file are copyrighted by other organizations, so it is left out.

Does it include personal data?

No. Every row is a designation, an area or a facility. The site file columns that name members of Congress are dropped, email addresses found in the web address column are removed, and domestic violence sites keep the blank address HRSA publishes.

Does it include map boundaries?

No. Components are listed by Census GEOID, so they join to boundary files or your own geography.

The HRSA files and the Census Gazetteer file are US government works, and HRSA lists no usage limitations for the shortage area and health center site files. HRSA does not endorse this product.

Coverage: About 21,600 designated Health Professional Shortage Areas: about 7,800 primary care, 7,200 dental health and 6,500 mental health. About 4,200 designated Medically Underserved Areas and Populations. About 19,000 active health center and FQHC look-alike sites run by about 1,600 organizations. The 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico and the other territories and freely associated states HRSA covers. Refreshed monthly from HRSA. Withdrawn and proposed-for-withdrawal designations stay in, with their dates.

Why pay for public data

HRSA publishes primary care, dental and mental health shortage areas as separate files, with each designation and the areas it covers in one layout, a few IDs reused for two different designations, and text that needs repair. This package splits designations from their components, separates the reused IDs, repairs the text and adds a county summary on standard FIPS codes that joins to Census, CDC and CMS county data.

How it is built

Pull the HRSA primary care, dental and mental health HPSA files, the MUA/P file, the health center service delivery and look-alike site file, and the Census 2026 Gazetteer county file.

Split each designation from the census tracts, county subdivisions and counties it covers, add a sequence number where HRSA reuses an ID, and summarize designations and sites for 3,296 counties and county equivalents.

Drop the site file columns that name members of Congress and remove web address values that were email addresses. Rebuilt monthly from files HRSA refreshes daily.
