Coverage: 102,178 schools in the 2024-25 directory, 100,252 of them open, and 19,630 districts. Directory, enrollment and staff for school years 2018-19 to 2024-25, district finance for fiscal years 2019 to 2023, proficiency for 2018-19 and 2020-21, and four-year graduation rates for 2018-19 to 2020-21. All 50 states, DC, five territories and Bureau of Indian Education schools. Finance covers the 50 states and DC.

Why pay for public data

NCES publishes directory, membership, staff and lunch files separately for each school year, with column names that change between years, and finance and test outcomes come from other programs. This package reconciles seven school years into one schema, joins finance and outcomes on NCES school and district IDs, and keeps suppressed values as NULL, never zero.

How it is built

    Pull the CCD school and district universe files for 2018-19 to 2024-25, the F-33 School District Finance Survey for fiscal years 2019 to 2023, the 2024-25 EDGE geocodes, and the EDFacts assessment and graduation rate files.

    Reconcile column names across years, key every table on NCESSCH and LEAID, and add a lookup table for every coded column. Coordinates, locale, county and congressional district come from the 2024-25 EDGE files.

    Keep proficiency and graduation rates as published, including suppression and ranges such as GE50 or 40-44, with numeric low and high bounds beside them. Rebuilt once a year.

Is this data not free from the government?
Yes. The source files are public and we link to them. You pay for the cleaning, the joins, the documented schema and the refresh, not for the data itself.
How is it delivered?
As Parquet or CSV files, by download link or to your own cloud bucket. The same tables load into Snowflake with the scripts we include. A Snowflake Marketplace listing is being set up and is not live yet.
Can I see the data before paying?
Yes. Ask for a sample and we send the Vermont rows from every table, plus the full data dictionary.
Why do test scores stop at 2020-21?
There were no statewide tests in spring 2020, so proficiency covers 2018-19 and 2020-21. Graduation rates cover 2018-19 to 2020-21, and Illinois is absent from every graduation rate file used. Later EDFacts outcome files were not available from the public download paths at build time, so they are left out rather than filled from elsewhere.
Are the proficiency rates exact?
Mostly not. To protect student privacy, most school rates are published as ranges such as 40-44 or GE50, or suppressed. Only 3 percent of school proficiency rows are exact values. We keep the published value and add numeric low and high bounds. Standards differ by state, so compare within a state.
Does it include personal data?
No. No source file used carries a named person or a personal email. Phone numbers, addresses and websites belong to schools and district offices.
What is the license?
The source files are US Department of Education and NCES data in the public domain. This product uses Department of Education data but is not endorsed or certified by the Department of Education or NCES.
